Seagoing™ Paramarine™ Onboard Analysis Tool

Seagoing Paramarine is an onboard analysis tool built on the powerful kernel of the Paramarine™ design package. Tailored for use at sea, Seagoing Paramarine allows up to the minute stability information to be obtained using an interface designed in association with serving ship staff. A wizard option aids the crew in working through each activity. The possible applications of Seagoing Paramarine are wide and include:

  • Emergency damage stability and grounding analysis
  • General loading computer
  • Aid to operations such as helicopter landing.
  • Training and simulation of predefined conditions or scenarios.

In the event of an emergency at sea data can easily and quickly be transmitted (via E-Mail) to shore based teams enabling support of the crew in making decisions and taking appropriate action.

The ship model used by Seagoing Paramarine is compatible with the Paramarine™ ship design package enabling convenient updating due to ship modifications.  This also allows shore based teams to utilise the wider more complex capabilities of Paramarine™ to aid the ship based crew.

Seagoing Paramarine has been developed with ease of use in mind by the incorporation of friendly wizards and a fully interactive deck plan view of the whole ship.  The latter, amongst other things, allows the viewing of the fullness of tanks visually based on input data.


Seagoing™ Paramarine™ for Submarines Onboard Analysis Tool

GRC have recently developed Seagoing Paramarine for Submarines, which is a submarine variation of Seagoing Paramarine, in conjunction with the UK Ministry of Defence’s Sea Technology Group. The development is in response to recent submarine incidents which have shown the potential application of an onboard Submarine Stability tool for emergency response. In addition Royal Navy Operators have identified other “trim” advisory facilities which an onboard Submarine Stability tool capability could perform in assisting to achieve the desired trim draughts or compensation for weight movements.


System Requirements

Traditional methods for changing trim can be quite complex to learn and calculate as there are many ways to change from one set of draughts to another. The system calculates the optimum change in the trim and compensation tanks. This capability is very useful for submarines as they need to achieve their trim draughts every time they dive.
For emergency response Seagoing Paramarine allows the user to define damage cases and grounding scenarios. These can then be analysed and remedial action looked at so that the operators can perform ‘what if’ scenarios before taking any action. The remedial action can then be compared with the original scenario to ensure that they have made a positive difference.
Docking analyses can also be performed which calculates the suing loads and the effect on stability as the water is drained down. This can be used for either routine or emergency docking.


Training

Seagoing Paramarine is a good tool for training as well because it has two modes of operation, one for day-to-day use and another for simulations. The simulations can be predefined so that training can be performed on known scenarios or they can be set up by the user so that they can learn about the effects of trimming or emergency response.
The system is due to be trialled on a submarine in the near future and a joint paper with the MoD’s Sea Technology Group will be presented at the RINA Warship 2005 - Naval Submarines 8 conference, see our 'Events 2005' page for more information.


Future Developments

Seagoing Paramarine is now in operation onboard a large proportion of royal navy warships as a comprehensive stability analysis tool.  However, development is ongoing to encompass all customer needs. Future Seagoing Paramarine capability developments include:

  • Longitudinal Strength Analysis
  • Bulkhead and Deck Failure Pressure Analysis
  • Structural Analysis
