Q. How is Paramarine licensed?
A. Paramarine is composed of many Basic Product Modules, each of which can be licensed separately. Each license runs for a calendar duration in multiples of one year which need not be the same as any other licensed element. The licensing control is maintained by the GRC merIT License Server which runs as a Service on any PC visible on the network to the Paramarine installed PC (including this PC itself). The License Server can service multiple seats (up to 250) and license configurations so that Paramarine can be used company wide. A hardware security device ("dongle") is required attached to the parallel (printer) port or a USB port of the PC running the License Server that ensures only bona-fide licenses are issued. For sites requiring more than 250 concurrent seats, multiple License Server/dongles can be managed over the same network.

Q. My PC does not have a parallel port but it does have a USB socket. Can I still run Paramarine?
A. Yes you can. GRC normally supply a parallel port dongle but can supply a USB dongle instead on request. Alternatively, if the GRC merIT License Server is running on another PC on the network to which your computer is connected and this has a parallel port, as it can service all the license requests.

Q. Do I have to have the GRC merIT License Server on the same PC as Paramarine?
A. No you don't. In a company with a network, GRC Ltd recommend that the License Server is installed on a departmental server running Microsoft Windows NT4 or Windows 2000. This gives the greatest flexibility to users if the Paramarine software is also installed on a network drive as any employee with privilege to have access to the software can run it from any Microsoft Windows NT4 or Windows 2000 PC. The advantage of a server PC is that it has a constant TCP/IP address.

Q. I have only purchased one seat of Paramarine. Is it possible to run up more than one copy of the program?
A. A single user may run up multiple copies of Paramarine on the same PC in the same log in session.

Q. When I run Paramarine I get the following error message: "Cannot connect to License Server, Limited unlicensed version only". What does this mean and how can I get Paramarine to work?
A. There can be many reasons and the following needs to be checked. (1) Has the license server and dongle drivers been installed and has your log in been directed to use a particular license server? The former points are the responsibility of the person who installed the Paramarine software with administrator privileges. The latter can be checked by bringing up the GRC License Configuration program (via the Start...Programs...Graphics Research Corporation menu). On the Client tab there is an edit box to indicate the PC on which the GRC merIT License Server to be used is residing. Check this is the one is expected. (2) The Network Name of the PC on which the GRC merIT License Server is running must start with an alpha character and not a number. i.e. A123BCD would be an acceptable name and 1ABCDEF would not. (4) The PC must have the TCP/IP protocol installed and bound to either a network card or a Loopback Adaptor.

Q. When I maximise Paramarine I get a black band down the right hand side and across the bottom of the graphics pane. Why is this happening?

Clipping Problems with Generic Implementation of OpenGL for Windows 2000.

The typical behaviour is that the right and bottom window borders are not rendered upon (are black). This only occurs on un-accelerated graphics cards. Systems with hardware-accelerated pixel formats will not have this problem.

GRC have had this problem with Windows 2000 supplied drivers for nVidia TNT2 M64 cards. This was solved by updating the graphics drivers to ones from the card manufacturer rather than those supplied on the Windows 2000 CD. The problem does not seem apparent with the given Windows 2000 drivers for nVidia GeForce cards.

Q. I have a PC with a nVidia TNT2 graphics card installed and I am running Microsoft® Windows® 2000. When I start Paramarine, I do not get any images in the graphics pane. What can I do?

OpenGL Support Not Available on nVidia TNT2 cards in MS Windows 2000.

Paramarine requires OpenGL support to work. The above problems are due to a lack of support in the drivers supplied on the Windows 2000 installation CD. If the PC on which Paramarine is to be installed is running Windows 2000 with a card based on this video chipset then the graphics pane of Paramarine will be blank. If this is the case then your IT department should install drivers for the graphics card from the card manufacturer suitable for Windows 2000. If these are not available, generic drivers can be obtained via the nVidia website (www.nvidia.com).
